![]() ![]() This recent refugee influx has exacerbated Jordan’s growing water shortage, increased demand for energy, education and health, and overwhelmed infrastructure and public service providers. Syrian refugees now make up more than 10% of Jordan’s population, with the majority living outside of formal camps in urban areas throughout the country and becoming more vulnerable the longer they are displaced. Considered one of the most water scarce countries in the world, it has hosted several waves of refugee populations since the 1948 War – Palestinians, Iraqis, and most recently Syrians. ![]() With a population of 9.5 million and limited natural resources, Jordan has been both a haven and transit point for the region’s refugees.
